Solar-powered drip irrigation transforms farming in Kwale, ending food shortages

Farming in Kwale County’s arid areas is being transformed through solar-powered drip irrigation, allowing smallholder farmers to grow crops year-round, regardless of erratic rainfall. The system uses water from boreholes, springs, dams, and water pans, and is improving food security, incomes, and resilience for local communities.

Supported by the Kwale County Government, the Sh2.6 million micro-irrigation project includes solar pumps, tanks, pipelines, and fencing. Farmers like Said Mwinyi, Aisha Kombo, and Juma Mangale report major improvements in crop yields, income, and daily food supply.

Governor Fatuma Achani emphasized the county’s commitment to climate-smart agriculture and expanding irrigation to reduce dependence on rainfall. The initiative focuses on horticulture crops like tomatoes, kale, onions, and African leafy vegetables, with similar projects being rolled out countywide in partnership with development agencies.
